PROPHETS On Mission in Smyrna…

Editors FINAL Update - Tuesday Nov 13, 2007: Mike Allen finished recording his harmonies and leads yesterday, @The Playroom Studio in Smyrna, TN. Mike, one of the premier bass singers in the world, did his usual outstanding job! I have posted a brief summary of yesterday’s session, as well as an update on the CD’s “release” schedule, in the “comment” section of this blog. My post is the first comment dated Nov 13th. Thank you for praying for The Prophets!

Editors Update - Thursday Nov 8, 2007: No LIVE chat today. We will be back in the studio tomorrow, Fri Nov 9. All four singers, Mike, Bill, Ed and I, will be recording vocal leads and harmonies in Friday’s sessions. I plan to do some LIVE blogging from the studio, tomorrow. Will probably make my first comment around Noon. Feel free to add comments now, or wait for me to log on tomorrow. We appreciate your interest. We also enjoy reading your thoughts and ideas. The guys are thankful for your words of encouragement.

Editors Update - Wednesday Nov 7, 2007: We are chatting now, in the comments section of this post…as Legendary singer, Mr Ed Hill, is recording some great stuff! Join us!

Editors Update - Tuesday Nov 6, 2007: The session planned for Tuesday was postponed until Wednesday Nov 7. My LIVE Updates will begin around 10am Wednesday. Ed Hill will be the main focus of the 10am session. It is possible that 1 or 2 other Prophets will also do some recording during this time. Meet me here at 10am Wednesday and we will chat as Ed sings.

Original Post…Tuesday Nov 6, 2007:

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, The Prophets will be recording the “final” vocals for our upcoming CD release. We are pretty excited! Once again, I will be posting LIVE Updates as the sessions are taking place. We will attempt to keep you informed as to how things are going; who is singing what song; and how much work is getting done; and finally, how much FUN we are having.

Sessions are scheduled for 10am, Wednesday and Friday @The Playroom Studio…I will post the schedule for Thursday as soon as it is finalized.

As of now, Wednesday’s plan is for Ed Hill to record his lead on “Jesus Wept”…and the baritone part on a couple of other tunes. Thursday’s session will be devoted to recording Mike Allen and Bill Baize. On Friday, I am slotted to record some my harmonic parts on 2 of the 3 songs we tracked at our session at Hilltop Studios, on Oct 26. I will Update the time and details of the schedule, here in the main post, with Editors Updates, each day.

The LIVE “chat” will take place in the “comments” section of this post. Click on the title above, or the word “comments” below, to join in. Thanks for your interest in the work and ministry of The Prophets Quartet.

Come on…come blog with me!

Sorry FRIENDS…The sessions scheduled for Tuesday, never took place. A change in plans beyond my control…I have posted the new schedule for this week’s TPQ recording sessions at the main post. While traveling, I was unable to get to the internet until now. My apoligies for any confusion this may have caused.

PLEASE meet me back here on Wednesday morning at about 10 O’clock, for LIVE chat, as Ed Hill begins the session at The Playroom Studio’s vocal microphone!

    Good morning folks!

Looks like everything is shaping up for a nice session, so far. Wanted to let you know I am on-line. Will give you an update as soon as things get started @The Playroom, in Smyrna, TN. Back in moments.

    Great!

  9. admin Says:

Ed Hill, the founder of The Prophets, (and a gospel music legend) has arrived. He is warming up that golden throat of his.

Ed’s ability to BLEND is amazing! Ahh, but this morning, he is starting out singing the lead for a traditional Stamps-Baxter “Singin’ School” song, that producer Johnny Minick brought to him a few months ago. We cut the track for this number at Hilltop Studio on Oct 26.

Our production team and Ed, literally went through 200-300 songs looking for something that would perfectly feature Ed’s emotional tone that can ooze feeling when he takes a lead. I think we have found the right song.

    PJ / TPQ

  10. Wes Says:

Is it common practice for only one voice to be recorded per session? I had always thought the voices were all recorded at the same time, just all in different channels.

  11. Live blog from Prophets recording session « Burke’s Brainwork Says:

[…] today.  It is an interesting glimpse into how these CDs we all love are recorded.  Check it out here! […]

  12. Daniel J. Mount Says:

Wes, I understand that it is becoming more common to record parts separately. Mr. Jackson, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe solos and bass lines are always recorded separately and on their own, and the top three parts on choruses are sometimes recorded together and sometimes singly.

  13. admin Says:

    Wes,

Vocals are recorded a variety of ways, and have been for years. Their is definitely a little spontaneity lost when parts are laid down individually…but groups have been using this technique for many years. It actually can improve feel and blend. Our producers have had us “lay down” the Lead part first.
Then the harmonics (5ths and 3rds, etc) next. Then finally the bass. This approach allows them to get the Lead like they want…then the other singers match the Lead in mood, tone and energy. It’s pretty effective. Most groups, then and now, try to take advantage of what their contemporary technology offers.

Great question…I can ellaborate if you like…but it probably will put our readers to sleep.

FYI: Warm-up is over…Ed is starting to really get into this tune now!

    Paul Jackson / TPQ

  14. Daniel J. Mount Says:

    That explains that!

  15. Daniel J. Mount Says:

This is really weird–comments seem to be disappearing and moving around as I comment.

  16. Wes Says:

That is really interesting. Have you ever seen mixed mode recording, where the main tracks are done individually, but then stacks are recorded all at the same time, or vice versa?

  17. admin Says:

OK now! Ed was very prepared this morning. Johnny Minick is very pleased with Ed’s work. Mr Hill warmed up for a while…got comfortable in the room…then sang through the song, “Jesus Wept” a couple of times, with great passion and precision. The Minick’s asked him to re-sing 2 or 3 lines for what we call “options”…and wham! He is done! Like the pro he is. A painless and powerful cut…of a very traditional sounding song with a very unique lyric.

For Daniel and any other historians out there. “Jesus Wept”, written by Terry Pillow, was published by Stamps-Baxter Music and released in a Song Book entitled “Temple Gates” in 1963-64.
Johnny Minick heard the song at a singing school in 1964, at the Oak Forest Assembly of God church on Fair Park Ave in Little Rock, AR. Johnny was 9 years old at the time. The Minick family loved the song, and adopted it as a “warm-up” tune, they would often sing before they performed other songs for concerts and church services. They never performed it for an audience. Ed, Bill, Mike and I had never heard the song. To our knowledge, no one has ever made a pro recording of the tune. Now, 44 years after it was copyrighted and published, The Prophets have the honor to present this touching song to the recorded world.

Now that’s a great story! Ed has done a great job with the lead.
Bill, Mike and I will add our parts on Friday! Can’t wait to get to sing some harmony…old style!

    Paul Jackson / The Prophets

  18. admin Says:

    WES…

What you describe as “mixed mode” is fairly common when adding stacks. Lari Goss used this method a lot with The Cathedrals when adding stacks. But, when I saw them record, and that was pretty often, they would usually do their part singing all together: 4 mics…4 guys. Then stack immediately.
They were so used to singing together, this worked. They would do solos and fixes, individually.

FYI: There are NO satcks on The Prophets project so far. Our producers are liking the “texture” of the blend of 4 mature voices and have yet to want to muddy the water with stacks. Could happen, but I doubt it.

FYI 2: They have completed “Jesus Wept” and are getting Mr Hill ready to re-do the baritone part on a song we already recorded once, but have changed the vocal arrangement a little.

    PJ / TPQ

  19. admin Says:

DANIEL…the weird stuff happened as my web-master adjusted the blog’s Clock…it was still on Central Daylight time.
    Sorry if it distracted you.

    PJ

  20. Daniel J. Mount Says:

No problem. How many more songs would Mr. Hill have to complete before you will go on to another vocalist?

  21. admin Says:

No one else is recording today. All 4 of us will record on Friday.
The balance of today and all of tomorrow will be spent “mixing” what is already finished…Cleaning and polishing tracks to get them ready for mixing…and preparing for Fridays session.

Speaking of Friday: Mike Allen will cut the lead for “One Thing” first up Friday morning. Bill and Ed will follow. Then I will finish the day by recording my harmonies for “One Thing” and “Jesus Wept”…I will probably do a few fixes on a lead or two. After Friday, all vocals will be done. Mixing and mastering will follow.
Then, “poof” we have a record!

FYI: Ed is back in front of the Mic singing baritone on an awesome Charles Billingsley song. Riverbend has big plans for this tear jerker!

    PJ / TPQ

  22. Daniel J. Mount Says:

Neat! I’ll be looking forward to hearing all about it.

I’ll especially be interested in hearing about the mixing process. I know the basics (i.e., get the balance right, then combine them onto the stereo track), but I have no idea what else goes into it. I’d be fascinated to hear. :)

  23. admin Says:

I will try to comment about “mixing” a little later. I am way behind on all of that ever since they moved everyting to monitor screens and hard drives. The old days of pushing faders and turning knobs was a blast! Alas, those days are gone forever. I’ll try to get some input from Producer-Engineer Aaron Minick and assistant Engineer, JT.

FYI: Ed’s still singing…these numbers, that are little more inspo, present a different sorta challenge. He’s having to re-tool and re-gear a little. But he is doing an outstanding job. Hope I can sing like that when I am 73! God bless him!

    PJ / TPQ

  24. Daniel J. Mount Says:

Thanks! I’m looking forward to it.

  25. admin Says:

Anybody heard from Quaid? I miss his insights and questions.
    PJ

  26. admin Says:

Ed’s got the groove now! This is such a beautiful song…with a gorgeous title: “Golden Streets”

    Wow!…PJ / TPQ

  27. Amy Says:

I like hearing details like this. If you keep up, you’re liable to sell me on a CD!

  28. Daniel J. Mount Says:

I’m looking forward to hearing the song…again.

If it’s the Charles Billingsley song, I think I’ve heard it before, but certainly never by a SG quartet.

  29. Wes Says:

How would you characterize the arrangements overall? Are they retro/traditional (i.e. PSQ, Dove Brothers), or more progressive (Gold City, Assurance)? Granted, the Prophets I’m sure will have their own sound, but I’m interested to know the direction you guys are taking. It sounds to me like you are keeping a modern edge to your music from your comments, which is very exciting to me.

  30. admin Says:

Guys…We are certainly not doing Golden Streets like CB did it. He was very pop and really did his AC thing. Cheryl Rogers actually composed the music from a lyric by CB. Johnny and I along with Sykes worked on this number. They let me help with the feel, seeing that I brought the tune to them. None of our guys had heard it. CB recorded it on his Pamplin CD about 10 years ago…anyway…we kept it very beautiful. It is inspo in chord structure. Though modern, it is dignified. It has southern instrumentation throughout…although, Johhny’s fantastic piano work will be the core of the track, I hope. It will be a critical mix. We expect the song to have a chance to become a standard for funerals and Memorials. Just a fantastic lyric.

    PJ / TPQ

FYI: We are planning for me to re-cut some of the lead Friday.
We have “lived with it” a while, and have a better feel for it now.

  31. admin Says:

More on “Golden Streets”…I think this song got lost a little in the pop cut. SG people LOVE songs about Heaven. AC is usually slanted toward younger folks who still think they will live forever. Also, the style of CB’s cut, though great, would not attract most SG fans. Had he done it more like a Ray Boltz cut, It would be a classic….just my opinion.

Charles can do any style. He has my favorite recorded version of my tune MERCY, which by the way, TPQ has included on this project….more later…

    PJ / The Prophets

  32. admin Says:

AMY…you better buy one! Just kidding…WELCOME to our chat.
Sorry I was so slow in moderating your comment. You will notice we shared a lot more details since you logged on.

I will answer Wes’s question about overall style and direction of this CD, shortly. Listening to the producers now.

    PJ / TPQ

  33. Amy Says:

Anyone that tells me more they’re recording a Stamps Baxter song that has never seen the light of day (so to speak) has my attention.

  34. admin Says:

    AMY…isn’t that a great story?

The song is very simple. Classic, quiet SG. Minick, as you would imagine, put a little of that Goodman-country sound in the track.
But it is still very pretty. Of course the pickers, Back, All, Lunn, Lindsey and the Minicks, are some of Nashville’s best country players. Ed’s lead is very reflective, as a the lyric calls for it to be. The Qt will basically sing old Stamps-Baxter style “answers” to Ed’s solo from start to finish. SG audiences and country fans a’like should be more than entertained…BLESSED, I think…I pray!

    PJ / TPQ

  35. admin Says:

Ed Hill is finished singing for the day. Producers are listening to cuts and mixes from other tunes now. Ed is lounging comfortably in The Playroom’s big control-room sofa.

A sofa that has seen the likes of Howard, Vestal, Ben, Allison, Ricky Skaggs, Russ Taff, Jack Price, Gerald Williams and countless other great singers…and yes even more Legends like Edwin Hill, Founder of The Prophets Quartet!

    You know what?
He looks good on that couch…like he belongs there.

Thanks for chatting…feel free to leave more comments. We are off for a lunch break..finally, at 2:30!
    Boy these guys work hard!

QUESTION: Should I do another post for Friday’s session?…or just continue our chat here? One of you expert bloggers tell me what I should do. I’m just a gospel singing preacher.

    Paul Jackson / The Prophets

FYI: I will be back in a couple of hours with an update from The Playroom Studio.

  36. Wes Says:

Paul, I would do a separate blog post for Friday.

  37. Daniel J. Mount Says:

It wouldn’t hurt anything to continue the chat here.

If you had a post break 100 comments, I think that several SG blogs would comment on it. :)

  38. Daniel J. Mount Says:

Sorry, Wes–I didn’t see your post.

  39. Wes Says:

That’s OK Daniel, I just think it would make for easier reading if you didn’t have to scroll through 40-50 posts from today to get to the posts for Friday. Easier navigation promotes more usage…I guess it’s the business programmer side of me coming out! :-)

  40. Ed Hill Says:

    Paul,

Well I’m finally home. Left early this morning and had a great time at the session today. Hope you all like what I have done on the songs. I listened to some of the songs that they have mixed and WOW.. I know you like them too. I’m looking forward to seeing you again on Friday. Be careful………..Ed

  41. admin Says:

Thanks Ed for taking time to post on my blog after such a long, but productive day in the studio. You did great! All the others will think so too. JM was really pleased with how prepared you were. You are such a pro! But your’e still a real guy. You have my love and respect Brother Edwin.

Friday will be neat, having all of The Prophets there together for our final day of recording on this landmark project. Thanks again for your kindness toward my family and me. It is a great priviledge to serve Him with You!

    PJ / The Prophets

  42. admin Says:

WesDaniel…great suggestions guys. 2 very good points. There is so much info on this chat about the songs, that I kind of lean Daniel’s way.

I won’t be able to post as much on Friday because I will be doing a lot of singing myself. That’s another reason I tend toward keeping this thread going. But Wes, I agree with everything you said too. (sounds like I’m a politician running for office). I will think about it and decide. There is probably a format that would number the comments. That would make it a little easier to help folks navigate. Thanks for the input, men.

I was going to summarize the day a little. But Mr Ed Hill took care of that for me! What a guy.

    Paul Jackson / The Prophets

  43. Daniel J. Mount Says:

I’m looking forward to today’s live chat! The final day of vocals on the project is about to begin!

Even if I couldn’t stand the CD (highly unlikely!), I’d still enjoy it because of the opportunity to watch it in the process of being developed, even if from a distance. :)

  44. Daniel J. Mount Says:

Just checking in…I’m stopping by every 15 or 30 minutes to see if anyone has posted anything. I’m pretty excited!

(And I’m glad I didn’t come down, because I would have had to come back by today–the day you’re cutting vocals on “One Thing” anyhow–since I’m doing a seminar tonight. In other words, I would have come down and ended up missing it after all. )

  45. Kathy Says:

Hi Paul & The Prophets! Just to let you know I took time from cooking my “chickenbog” to lend encouraging words to you guys! Hope the session today is productive and that all are in full vocal form! I am anxiously waiting to hear this CD, especially “Jesus Wept”. You will have to ask Paul about the “chicken Bog”, it’s a countrygirls thing! God Bless!

  46. Wes Says:

Hope the session is going well….will be checking for updates from time to time…especially when all the program code starts running together… :-)

  47. Daniel J. Mount Says:

I wonder if he was able to get Internet access today.

  48. admin Says:

    Thanks Guys!

We are going strong @The Playroom! Session started at 1pm with Bill Baize up first. Tenor singing gets everybody going!

Johnny Minick let Bill ease into the session by starting with Ed’s feature tune, JESUS WEPT. With ease Bro Bill laid in the beautiful tenor harmony, as he sang traditional SB “answers” to Ed’s excellent lead.

Bill is now singing his lead lines on the chorus of ONE THING. Mike will solo the verses, but true to SG tradition, he will hand off most of the refrain’s lead to Bill! ONE THING is a hard charger with a lot of words.
So how do they say it?…”The joint’s a’jumpin’”…wish you were here.

The tenor is about done…Ed Hill is in the bullpen…and ready to lay down his harmonic part…then I will follow. Thanks for checking in. We will be here the next couple of hours…or more!

    Paul Jackson /The Prophets

  49. admin Says:

KATHY, forgive me for lopping you in with the “guys”…You are certainly a lady! We will need some of that chickenbog by the time we get through with ONE THING…stay tuned Ya’ll.

    PJ / The Prophets

  50. admin Says:

Daniel…our tune, ONE THING, has made a decided turn toward a traditional Nashville feel. Can’t wait to hear Mike Allen sing these verses.
This song is what Howard called a “Rat killer”…it’s a stomper to me.

Ed has cut his harmony. They are getting things ready for me to take the mic and sing my part…we are having fun AND working, all at the same time. I love my job!

    PJ / The Prophets

  51. Jan Says:

Glad to hear you guys are going. I’ve watched off and on to see if you’d get going this afternoon. Forgot the time difference - I’m an hour ahead. Glad to see things are under way and going well.

    Chickenbog??? Sounds interesting.

  52. Daniel J. Mount Says:

A decided turn toward a traditional Nashville feel…as compared to what? A convention song?

    Interesting either way.

I just got in (LATE!) from a seminar I did on the Faith of America’s Presidents. I had a great time, but I did think of you when I got slowed down in Nashville traffic on the way there!

  53. admin Says:

JAN…Chickenbog? You don’t know what that is? (I sure didn’t)…
I am going to introduce a new feature on this blog, that we will call:

“Gospel Fare from the Gospel Road”

This dish will be our first entry. The recipe was sent to me by my friend KATHY, a gospel music loving Baptist from the coastal Carolina area.

If you have a Recipe that you would serve a hungry gospel singer, E-mail it to me for my expert inspection. More on this when I post my first “Fare” feature.

FYI: The session went very well. Great to be with Johnny, Aaron, JT, Ed and Bill…Matthew and I enjoyed our ride together as well.

FYI 2: We are now in Knoxville awaiting the 12:30pm (EST) Kick-off at historic Neyland Field (Stadium)…HOGS vs Volunteers. We will be 2 little red dots in the sea of orange more than 100,000 strong! Wow…I’m going to try to sleep….might have to post a sports story.

    PJ / The Prophets

  54. admin Says:

Daniel…the traditional Nashville sound is a “little” country mixed in with traditional “gospel sangin’”…yahoo! Mike Allen will record his leads and harmony’s on Monday.

Had a lot of fun singing my harmony lines. Ed and I are going to enjoy hearing Mike and Bill show-out a little on this cut…and on stage!

Bill remarked, that he thought ONE THING would be a real SG “radio friendly” song. Hope so!

Got to get some sleep. Got to “Call the Hogs” tomorrow, in the land of the orange clad philistines!

    PJ / The Prophets

  55. Daniel J. Mount Says:

That would be weird, to have a song I co-wrote on radio eventually. I’ve gotten accustomed to the idea of having such a song on a CD, but not on radio.

So you didn’t quite end up getting done?

  56. Wes Says:

GO VOLS!!!! (But I think you guys will win…..)

  57. Jan Says:

A Gospel Fare from the Gospel Road feature would be fun to read. I’ll look forward to seeing it.

Sorry about the Hogs outcome. But I’ll bet the game was fun anyway. Hope you aren’t driving all the way to LR tonight. If so, both of you be careful!

  58. Daniel J. Mount Says:

    Any studio updates?

  59. admin Says:

Mike is suppose to be recording this morning. I am back in LR. Should have a report from The Playroom soon.

    PJ / The Prophets

  60. admin Says:

Mike Allen is in a session now. All reports from the studio indicate that he is sailing along with flying colors! Perfect talk for an ex-Marine on Veteran’s Day ‘07!

God Bless Mike…and God Bless America!

    PJ

  61. Daniel J. Mount Says:

Great. I look forward to hearing when he’s done!

  62. admin Says:

Well friends…Mike Allen had a fantastic recording session yesterday, Monday Nov 11. He cut his lead on “One Thing The Father Forgets”, and his bass parts on “Jesus Wept” (Ed’s feature), and our Veteran’s tribute, “Because They Gave”…as always, Mike was pepared and ready.

Thank you to everyone who prayed for Mike and the rest of The Prophets. Vocal parts for all 11 songs are now completed. However, one cut is being re-evaluated and could be tweaked some. Essentially, we are done. The project is now in the hands of the producers and engineers. A major photo shoot is scheduled for later this month. Video production is also on the close horizon. Retail release is being scheduled now, for the first quarter of 2008.

We have been told that recording will begin soon on a follow up and some specialty products. I will keep you posted. Thanks for your interest and your prayers.

    Paul Jackson / The Prophets

  63. Daniel J. Mount Says:

    Great news!

  64. admin Says:

    Thanks Daniel!

    It is great news, indeed.
After numerous delays, it’s good to be where we are. Thanks for your encouragement. I hope this CD will meet with your approval. I know that you got to hear the scratch version of our co-write. Aaron is sending me Mike’s vocal version tomorrow…maybe I’ll play it for you over the phone…I can’t wait to hear it! Writer’s priviledge. Course we can’t play it for other folks…but pretty soon, it’s out there.

    PJ / The Prophets

  65. Daniel J. Mount Says:

I will be waiting on the edge of my seat…except during the night, when I guess I will be on the edge of my bed! :P

  66. Matthew Jackson Says:

That’s great news about Mike getting his vocals done. I’m looking forward to hearing them. Especially “One Thing” and “Because They Gave”. I think his bass part on “Because” is going to be the final piece in making it a truely great song.

I’m looking forward to everyone hearing your talent (Dad)… You could have been singing in Nashville since the ’70’s if you had chosen too. God had a different plan.

I’m excited about what he has in store in the coming years.

  67. admin Says:

    Dear Son (Matt),

You are my eldest. You have been with your Mother and me a while, now. Your Mom and are very proud of you. We are thankful that you are making it a priority to use your outstanding musical gift for The Kingdom. I am particularly greatful that you were able to join us (The Prophets) in the studio, on several occasions. I believe that your presence was a blessing to all of us. I KNOW that it was a great encouragement to me. The “guys” remarked to me, more than once, that they were very impressed with your spirit.

As you know, a while back, your brother (Micah) and I were able to share the “Minick-Nashville-Playroom” experience when He recorded his CD of original songs. He is very talented as well.
So it was only fitting that you and I get to be together throughout this “Prophets” recording.

I am a blessed man! I have the world’s greatest wife (Kathy); the world’s greatest Dog (Butkus); and the world’s greatest sons (YOU and Mic)…AND, we live in the greatest State (AR); in the greatest Nation (USA) in the history of the world!

I am so glad that God has allowed me to sing a little bit…BUT, if I never sang another note, or wrote another line, or preached another sermon…I have been, and I am…BLESSED!!!

Thanks Matt for loving your old Dad!

    GOD BLESS America!
Buddy, never forget that “Today We live in freedom, Because They Gave Their All”

    PJ / The Prophets

  68. Kathy Says:

May God richly use all of you and your talents for furthering his work! Thank you all for being used of our Saviour. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

  69. admin Says:

Thank you Kathy! Don’t eat too much “Turkey bog”…guuurll!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and that ornry husband of yours!

    PJ

  70. Kathy Says:

Actually, we had chicken bog for dinner today and collards! Now I know you eat collard greens don’t you?????
When are you going to get some sermons on the Highlands Church website?????? Can’t wait to hear those as well as The Prophets CD!!!

  71. admin Says:

    Kathy,

We eat more turnip greens in AR! Mm Mm good!

OK…you are soooo right. We need some sermons online…and some songs too. Will speak with my web-master Monday. Might just e-mail him Wednesday. Have a great Thanksgiving!

    PJ

PS…I will post a Thanksgiving article within the hour or so. Come back and give us a good story or prayer/praise!

  72. Jimmy P Says:
